Wow!! What a turn out for the April 6th Department of Labor presentation, “CAREERS OF THE FUTURE: What Students Need to Know about the Job Market”!  While we planned for 20 students, 47 students signed in. Some teachers and staff members also attended.

The presenter, Ms. Karen Knapik-Scalzo from the US Department of Labor, provided everyone with critical information about CNY’s economy and employment prospects.  And surprisingly, the news was not all bad! For example, even though CNY’s economy is slowing down, there are still employment opportunities out there in the areas of computer technology, customer service, accounting and many entry-level positions. Not to mention the opportunities in the fast-growing health industry. So don’t lose hope - especially since getting an education is one the most important things a student can do to become and stay competitive in today and tomorrow’s workplace! In addition to getting an education, we learned that the most important skills employers look for in job candidates are strong communication and interpersonal skills, a good work ethic, showing initiative and having problem-solving and analytical skills. Job candidates can also increase their chances of being hired if they have computer skills, the ability to learn and retain information, and have work experience through internships, mentor relationships, job shadowing, or volunteering.

Lastly, the presenter gave the group an overview of CareerZone (www.nycareerzone.org), which is an online career exploration and planning system—another resource for SEOC students who are, or will be, looking for a job in New York State.

All in all, it was a great presentation with lots of valuable information for SEOC students, staff and faculty. Thank you to the Department of Labor, and Ms. Karen Knapik-Scalzo for taking the time to talk to our students.
