It's been awhile since you've heard from us over here at the SEOC - we've had a busy year full of additions, changes, and growth! Here's what's been happening...
- Select GED students have had the chance to try out our accelerated course that is based on independent study and teacher guidance. This is an intense program that is geared for students that have one subject area left to pass on the GED.
- SEOC faculty and staff have been engaged in the SEOC Challenge over the past few months. Divided into teams, we have been working on ways to make our building more friendly to students and visitors. As part of this challenge, a variety of welcoming features can be seen throughout the building, such as plants in the windows of the top floor, and greeters for new students on the first day of classes. There is much more to come!
- In December, the ATTAIN Lab moved into its new space on the bottom floor next to the Learning Lab and library. It's a beautiful space, with more computer stations for students and natural light. Students and Lab Managers are delighted!
- We held our annual Student Recognition ceremony on May 18th at Clary Middle School on the city's South Side. Over 80 students were present to receive their certificates of completion, and we were thrilled to have two amazing guest speakers, Melanie Littlejohn and Brandiss Pearson. Ms. Littlejohn is the Vice President of Business Services at National Grid, and spoke to our students about the importance of perseverance in achieving their goals. Ms. Pearson is a recent graduate of the SEOC, and completed both our CNA and College Prep programs. Currently she is working towards her Master's in nursing at Lemoyne College. She was able to tell our graduates about her path to success, and give them a real-life example of what academic excellence and motivation can do for a person when they committ to a professional goal.
- Now we are looking forward to the start of our summer programs. These will include MS Office Certification training, Green Energy training, Literacy Volunteer sessions, a partnership with Onondaga Earth Corps, and summer tutoring. The building will be busy!
Stay tuned for updates regarding our fall offerings!
